Motivation. Have you ever thought about what motivates you?
Everyone has different drivers and different motivations because everyone is unique. Traditionally, companies have attached a huge amount of importance to money as a way of motivating the workforce. We see it in every industry. High rewards for high performers, low rewards for low performers.
I heard something recently that challenged that idea. In fact, it pretty much turned that idea on it’s head. Motivation doesn’t work the way you think it does.
The traditional ‘carrot & stick’ method of incentivising and rewarding employees does not work in the way that you might expect. In fact, this method only works effectively if the task involved uses only mechanical skill. Once the task called for even rudimentary cognitive skill, the higher the reward leads to poorer performance.
Does that sound strange? I bet you are nodding!
