It is almost a year to the day since I posted on my blog. I wish I had a fancy excuse for why I haven’t been posting. I don’t.
The truth is, I got busy. Like, really busy!
I have a young daughter who is nearly 2 years old. She is my world. I spent almost every moment away from work with her.
I have also changed directions with my approach to the blog. I’m no longer interested in being a Job Search Coach. I will continue to offer advice and support to job seekers but free of charge. I am a Recruiter. That’s where my interest lies and that is what I will be doing for many years to come.
With that in mind, I started a new weekly vlog series that I am calling ‘My Journey’. I plan on documenting my journey by posting a video every week on Facebook and YouTube. I’d love for you to come along on that journey with me.
I started a new job back in March with a company called Scout who are a specialist Digital Recruitment Agency based in Surry Hills. I kicked off the vlog in my first week in the new job.

In this episode, I teach you the exact formula I have used with every candidate on how to prepare for any interview.
I wanted to go really deep and practical for you and to teach you how that you can use every time you face an interview situation.
I am always stunned at how few job seekers do their homework leading up to an interview if I am completely honest. Lots of people tend to overlook the interview prep because they might have multiple interviews happening within a short space of time. This is not a good enough excuse in my book!
Interviewers also look for candidates who truly understand the role they are applying for, so reading up on the essential skills and delving deep into the job description (if you have one) is also a great idea.
One thing that so many candidates tend to forget (or simply don’t do a good enough job of ) is to sell themselves against each of the requirements of the role. This can be done by preparing some examples in advance of the interview of how you meet the criteria, or where you have had the specific experience they are looking for.
And lastly, make sure you go into the interview with some really well thought out and intelligent questions for the interviewers.
This can really set you apart from every other candidate they meet and leaving a very positive, lasting impression on them. You can do a good job in the final part of the interview by asking some insightful questions. This will get the interviewers talking about you in a positive way and that can only be a good thing!

Everyone loves to hate Recruiters. Well, maybe not everyone, but there are a lot of ‘Recruiter Haters’ out there.
LinkedIn and Twitter are two places where a lot of the haters congregate and vent their collective anger and frustration on the recruitment industry. Every day, dozens of articles are published by job seekers who share their bad experiences online. Some of the stories are shocking.
As most of you know, I’ve worked in the recruitment industry for the past 11 years. So, I’ve been around the block a fair few times! Recruitment, being an unregulated industry, comes in for a for a lot of stick because each recruitment agency has a vastly different approach to the next and there are a huge amount of inexperienced Recruiters out there who just aren’t very good at the job.
There are, however, lots of very good Recruiters out there who would be invaluable to you and your career if you build a relationship with them. You just have to find them! That’s the hard part. Not every Recruiter is bad.
I’ve worked with Recruiters who epitomise professionalism. They build genuine long term relationships with their candidates and clients. They have their finger on the pulse of the market. They will never say they will call you and not show up.
If you have a bad experience with a Recruiter, it is easy to fall into the trap of letting your anger and frustration cloud your judgement. It is easy to attribute your bad experience to the recruitment industry as a whole and forever carry that negativity around with you when you are looking for a new job. This can be especially hard if a Recruiter has abused your trust.
Don’t let one or two bad experiences with an individual ruin your impression of an entire industry. There are bad professionals in every industry unfortunately.
